Justin followed Heather during lunch. He knew that she normally ate alone under a giant maple. It was so relaxing there; he would have no trouble getting her to sleep. She was so perfect. He would never have the nerve to talk to her face to face, but if he could just be in her mind, even as a dream, maybe she would talk to him.
Once she was asleep, Justin pulled himself into her dream, shaping it into a romantic beach. She was wearing a flowing white dress and looking around. "Justin?" she asked. "Where are we?"
"We're in love," he smiled, taking her hand and pulling her to him. "And tonight, we make love." He kissed her roughly, eager.
She pushed back. "Wait, no..."
He began to pull at her dress. This was just a dream, nothing bad was going to happen in the real world. "This is going to be amazing."
"Stop!" She began to fight back but in the dream world, he was king. He waved his hand, her clothes going away.
"You want this," he urged her.
"No!" she began crying, making him stop and pull out of the dream. She was under the tree still, but she didn't wake. In fact, it barely looked like she was breathing. He ran over and shook her slightly. "Heather?" She didn't respond and he found he couldn't get back into her dream. She wasn't in the dream world. She was in a coma.
Five years later, Justin was still stopping by the hospital to watch Heather every Sunday. The doctors didn't know what caused the coma and they couldn't bring her out of it. But her family still wouldn't pull the plug.
"You have to move forward, Justin."
He turned to the man who had walked up. "I'm sorry, do I know you?"
The man gave him a card. "I'm Jeremy Dodson. And I have a job offer for you."
