Episode 1.4 – Rearranging
A few days later, it’s time for Willow’s funeral. Danielle has been avoiding the Magic Box all together while everyone tries to comprehend what’s happened. Tara calls Danielle and asks her to attend the funeral which she does. Not everyone is happy to see her. Tara understands that Danielle did what she thought would help. Xander straight punches her in the face, blaming her for Willow’s death completely. Giles assures her that it’s not her fault and asks if she’s still willing to help. She is.
Buffy is the last to leave Willow’s grave. Bray approaches her and offers his apology for what happened. He wishes there was something he could do. She tells him that it doesn’t matter what any of them do. This is life and this is the way it is. She talks to him about the need for revenge for things. Not necessarily Willow’s death, just in general. With all the people that have died, bringing revenge to their killers gives focus to people’s lives, molds them. Bray doesn’t really understand. Buffy tells him that if his fiancé and child hadn’t of been killed, he wouldn’t have become a vampire hunter. So their deaths had to happen so he could help the world. (“It doesn’t matter how many you save. There are still some that die.”) She walks away, leaving him to think about the path his life has taken.
The gang has assembled at the Magic Box. Darla is their new priority. Xander keeps his distance from Danielle to avoid hitting her again. Research is put on a hold when Oceana walks in. Okay, so people really aren’t happy to see her now. But she says she’s actually come with some very interesting news. Danielle’s spell wasn’t a complete waste. It didn’t kill Willow, that was Oceana. (Xander makes the proper apology.) What Danielle did instead was actually take Willow’s mystical power. Oceana vanishes, leaving everyone in a bit of shock.
Tara tries to get Danielle to levitate a pencil, which she does but soon it’s flying through the air at Bray who dodges it. Maybe practice would help, they decide. Giles, Buffy, Xander, Tara and Bray follow Danielle to the training room. Her first two attempts to stake a dummy in the heart actually work. But when Bray acts as a living target, he only manages to dodge one, the other clipping his shoulder. Practice over.
As they all head back out, they find Anya on the ground, bitten. She’s not dead however and is whisked away to the hospital. There was a note pinned to her: “Rock a bye baby.” Bray fumes as he realizes Gabi is responsible for the attack.
He and Buffy head out to Spike’s to see what else he’s heard. He knows that Gabi’s supposed to be holding up at someplace on twenty-second, but that’s all. He suggests Bray check it out himself. Vampires still think the Slayer is dead. Bray does so, telling Buffy that if he isn’t back in thirty minutes to look for him. Buffy agrees and heads back for patrol.
At the Magic Box, Danielle and Giles have been left alone. They begin a game of backgammon and talk about how they feel about… backgammon. (“I haven’t known backgammon that long but I like what I’ve seen so far.”)
Bray follows Spike’s directions to a house on twenty-second where he sees a group of vampires hiding out. But they aren’t the only ones. Three are outside and find him there. Big fight ensues, but Bray is successful. As he’s gathering himself together, a little worn and beaten, he hears clapping and is soon faced by Darla. She smiles and tells him that she’s impressed. Those were some of the best fighters she could find. She also comments that Spike pulled through luring him there. Any attack is put on hold though when Darla is tackled by Buffy. (“You said thirty minutes.”) Darla runs. (So much for the Slayer being a secret.)
On the way back, Buffy handles a minor demon they come up on. But she isn’t just slaying this demon, she’s torturing it, beating it, and cutting pieces of its flesh off (“How does that feel?”) before beheading it. Bray comments briefly but lets it slide.
Meanwhile, the conversation has finally moved from backgammon as Danielle asks Giles how he feels about her. He admits to having some feelings for her but he’s had a bit of bad luck with relationships. He explains about Jenny Calendar and how being in a relationship in the Hellmouth is never easy. He’d understand if she didn’t want to see him. Danielle makes a bold move on her part and leans in, kissing Giles. Bold move pays off though as Giles returns the gesture.
Bray and Buffy walk in to see the two Watchers and comments of “ew” are made. Buffy says she’s going to get some rest. Bray walks her to the door and tells her to sleep well. She TOTALLY looks him over and winks as she says “I will.” Bray watches dumbfounded as Buffy sounders away with a sway in her hips.
