Episode 1.3 – Choices
A week has passed since the return of the Slayer. Most everything seems to be running smoothly. Bray has been training with Buffy and is more than impressed with a Slayer’s abilities. Buffy has seemed a bit work oriented and distant though. Even Danielle and Bray can tell there’s something not right.
Giles has been training Danielle in some basic hand-to-hand combat so that she can mildly defend herself. But he’s also seemed a bit distracted. Danielle can’t tell if it’s Buffy or her. Danielle questions Giles and he confesses that he’s just worried about everything. He inquires about how Danielle is doing with Buffy. The Slayer just seems to be basically avoiding her. Giles assures her that Buffy will come around and asks if she’s had any news from the Council. That would be a no.
That day, Buffy and Bray go into train as normal but she seems to be taking a bit more pleasure in kicking his arse. She’s taunting and a little rough. During a bout with swords though, she takes a small cut to the arm. Training done for the day and she goes home.
Spike shows up and exchanges some words (Okay, insults) with Bray before informing Danielle about a little tidbit of information he heard. Seems that Gabi is doing some recruiting for vampires willing to fight. He also tells Danielle to ask Giles of fighting Darla would be a bad thing. Confused, Danielle approaches Giles with the information. He is none the less a little shocked and sends Bray to retrieve Buffy from her house. (“We’re moving to defcon three.”)
Willow during this time, seems weaker than normal. Rightly concerned, Danielle checks to see if there are any repercussions to the spell and finds that there isn’t to the caster but that there can be to the subject, Buffy. Danielle brings this to Giles’ attention. But soon Willow’s condition worsens and she’s taken to the hospital.
Bray goes to Buffy’s to get her. She’s more than willing to face another baddy so she heads out with him. But on the way there his car stalls. This kind of really sucks since neither of them knows anything about cars. As they watch the motor, a young woman appears and asks how the witch is doing. Then she vanishes. Buffy makes a dead run for the Magic Box.
Danielle and Tara are waiting in the hospital when they also have a run in with our little friend. She introduces herself as Oceana and tells Danielle and Tara that she is going to show Willow that power is nothing if you don’t know what you’re doing. Then she vanishes.
Danielle heads back to the Magic Box where Bray and Buffy have arrived and informs Giles about what’s happening. He says that maybe Oceana is a sort of demi-god that is taking judgment. Buffy comments on how this won’t be the first god they faced.
Speak of the… demi-god, Oceana arrives to explain what is happening. What’s happening to Willow is a result of her spell to resurrect Buffy. (“There is a balance to the Earth. For what you take you must give. You got your Slayer back, we get the witch.”) When asked who she is she explains that she’s human, a messenger for a higher being. Danielle tries the noble approach and offers herself in Willow’s place. Let me tell you, folks, this argument goes on for a while. Oceana says it’s too late. The witch will be dead before dawn. With this last statement, she leaves. Bray wants to kill Oceana to stop her. But Anya arrives for work and confirms the balance thing. (“Eye for an eye,” she says.) Bray tries to do a comparison with balancing her books and she freaks out when he suggests she’s a hundred dollars short.
Not convinced of the balance thing in regard to Willow, Bray heads out to Spike’s with Giles. This is when Bray gets his first sight of “Ripper.” Giles gets all rough with Spike to see if he’s heard anything but he hasn’t. Willy’s is the other option that Spike offers.
Before heading into Willy’s, Giles warns Bray that the place might come as a bit of a shock (understatement of the year) and that no matter what, he needs to keep the violence level down. Bray’s a bit dismayed at the whole demon bar but understands when Giles explains about picking the lesser of two evils. They get information this way and that’s why they don’t disturb anything.
Willy is a little uncooperative but after a little cash and a little threat of violence, he takes Bray and Giles into a back room to tell them about Oceana. She’s a witch who got a connection to the Powers for some reason. She also happens to be a patron of that bar. She told Willy about what she had to do to Willow and evidently she’s a little torn up about it. Unfortunately, there’s nothing that can be done. Defeated, Giles heads to the hospital to see Willow while he can.
Danielle has been a little busy during this time. Her offer to Oceana to trade her life for Willow’s has given her an idea. She gets a hold of Tara and confers with her on a spell that will transfer whatever is happening to Willow to her, killing Danielle instead. They gather the items and head to the hospital.
Giles and Buffy are there with Willow when they arrive. Danielle tells them what she plans to do and asks them to leave the room. Before leaving, Giles asks Danielle if she’s sure this is what she wants to do. (“This is my fault. I want to do this.”) Taking a deep breath, Giles leans in and kisses her goodbye. (And boy howdy what a kiss!)
Bray arrives as Giles closes the door behind him. Everyone waits. After about an hour, everyone sees a bright flash of light around the cracks of the door. Soon, monitors are squealing and doctors rush in. Danielle and Tara are ushered out and soon the terrible news is delivered.
Completely lost, the group drives back with Bray, watching the dawn come, prophecy come true. Willow Rosenberg is dead.
