Episode 1.2 – Functioning
The next day, Bray arrives at the Magic Box to talk to Giles about the Hellmouth and is a little in awe of the type of activity around the place. Giles also tells him about the Slayer. Bray admits he’s heard of her but thought of her more as a fairy tale than a reality.
Danielle also arrives to “work” and is called by the Council who ask how she is progressing in her task. (?) She tells them things are at a standstill and they remind her how important it is that her task be completed.
Bray is offered the use of Buffy’s old training room and finds it amazing that a little girl could have had the type of strength and agility to survive such a place.
Danielle asks leave from the Magic Box and after assuring Anya that she’s off the clock, she heads to the Summers’ house where Willow and Tara are staying. There she asks Willow if she has the ability to bring Buffy back to life. After some debate on pros and cons, Willow and Tara agree to help and not tell Giles.
Later in the day, Danielle is “working” and Bray is still using the training room when Willow and Tara show up to take a look at the horn from the Malark demon. Tara points out it kind of smells while Willow tries not to point out there’s a chunk of demon gunk left on it. They decide to hang onto it just in case.
This brings on Bray’s next question: There’s really magic? Willow gives him three examples. One, she sprinkles some dust to give him the allusion of breasts. Two, she telekinetically floats the horn. And three, she speaks to Bray in his mind. He’s mildly convinced now.
Giles receives a phone call which he relays to the group. A vampire by the name of Gabriella (Gabi) Blades has found out that the Slayer is dead and is making her way to Sunnydale. Unfortunately, she will be hard to find since all they have to go on is that she is of Latino decent and most of them are pale by nature anyway. The plan is to split up and stake out.
Danielle, Willow and Tara go to the Bronze to look around there. Danielle is introduced to Dawn who came to hang for a while. Danielle is still a little amazed at how many people know about the Slayer.
Xander, Anya and Bray go for a patrol in the cemeteries where Anya simply will not stop talking and accidentally gives clues to her age. Xander, trying to stop Anya’s rambling ends up falling into an open grave. As Bray helps him out, he’s struck over the head and the three notice four vampires around them. Bray slays three while Xander gets one. They regroup back to the Magic Box where Giles tells them they might as well head to the Bronze with the others.
Danielle, Willow, and Tara try to blend their way in. This is easy for Willow and Tara but Danielle’s blouse, sweater, slacks and hair pulled up into a bun make her stand out a bit. So they ask her to sit this one out. No offence of course. Reluctantly, she agrees then spots Spike out of the corner of her eye. She heads over to him in hopes to mingle better with another English accent. He rolls his eyes, takes her sweater, ties it around her waist and takes out her bun, letting her hair loose. He says it helps, although she’s still a stuffy Watcher. He’s interested in why she thinks he wouldn’t just kill her and she brings up the chip. Using a display that could have come from COPS, he puts her in a hold against the wall and lets her know not to toy with evil. Even though he may not be able to hurt her himself, there are other things he can do. Frustrated, she fumes and tells him that if she’s that incompetent then maybe he should train her. He says sure. Three hundred a week.
Bray, Xander and Anya arrive at the Bronze and immediately spot ten Latino girls. Anya points to one in leather and says that’s her. (“Well, at least I think it is.”) Bray is amused but his attention is drawn to Danielle who is trying to stay and chat with Spike but he keeps pushing her away. When she finally comes back to the table, Willow and Tara join them and they all admit they aren’t sure Gabi’s even here.
Bray goes over to Spike and tries the old intimidation bit. (Help us or else.) Spike reminds him that he’s evil and if Gabi wants to take them out then more power to her. She’s tough from what he remembers. Bray says that Spike will help for his “girlfriend’s” sake. Spike’s confused as he’s drug over to the table where Bray tells everyone about Spike and Danielle being a thing. Both of them are denying it but all arguments are stopped as a Latino girl steps up. She’s amused by their bickering. She smiles and makes it known that she is indeed Gabi. (Who happens to have been the one in leather that Anya first guessed.)
Gabi grabs Tara and holds her by the throat, stating that if anyone moves she’ll break her neck. Bray tells everyone to freeze. Gabi goes into how she’s heard a little rumor about a Slayer-less Hellmouth. She’s here to stake her claim and there’s nothing any of them can do about it. She also mentions Spike’s fighting for the other side. (“He kills our kind. Freak.”) So that they understand she’s serious, she breaks Tara’s arm and flees as several people rush to aid.
Tara is given a cast at the hospital while the others head back to the Magic Box to inform Giles about what occurred. Everyone hits the books and it’s our next generation Watcher who finds out just how bad of a bad ass Gabi really is. It’s agreed that they will need to prepare to fight her. They decide that they’ll stake out where Gabi could be set up the next night.
Which is the night of the spell to resurrect Buffy. Willow, Tara and Danielle are out back at Buffy’s grave and perform the spell. But it doesn’t seem to work. Weak, Willow stays behind with Tara while Danielle reports to the Magic Box and heads out with the others. Once there, she confesses to Giles about being there to bring Buffy back and take charge as her Watcher. This none the less infuriates him but he pushes it aside to focus on the task at hand.
Giles takes them all down to a part of town where people of Gabi’s sort of attire and personality might hang out. There are plenty of abandoned warehouses and such. They split up into three groups. Giles, Anya, and Xander in one, Danielle and Bray in the second and Spike alone as the third.
Bray and Danielle happen across a group of women, dressed in the same leather attire, dancing and laughing with a boom box at one warehouse. He attempts the suave approach (Hey, how’s it going) and soon they are faced with six vampires. Danielle is forced to fight and gets the crap beat out of her but soon the others converge and the slaying is done. Giles carries Danielle out but stops dead in his tracks when he sees what Spike sees.
Buffy.
That’s right. The little spell had a delayed reaction clause that no one had seen. She’s a bit disoriented, but seems to be okay. Giles and the others go back to Buffy’s house with her where Willow takes her to get cleaned up, Dawn following closely. Giles is furious. He snaps at Danielle, telling her she’s a fool and that she had no right to do what she did.
Bray stops his yelling by interrupting with “At least you have a second chance.” He produces a picture of him and a young woman, but refers to losing “them.” The fiancé was pregnant. So Bray tares into Giles about how he should be grateful.
Buffy comes down telling Bray things aren’t that simple. She seems to be better, straight speech and all. She asks why she’s back and Danielle informs her that it was her duty and that she had a new Watcher. Buffy shoots that down immediately and proves that she doesn’t have a new Watcher by listening to Giles and ignoring the new one. Buffy asks Bray what his story is and he explains about being a vampire hunter. He also says it’s an honor to meet her and that her help will be needed. She doesn’t seem too ecstatic at all. She knows that she’s a pawn in the game of life and that she has a job to do. That’s all.
Danielle talks with Giles on the side and begs for forgiveness. She was just following orders and didn’t realize what was really going on. He tells he that he wasn’t lying about her having potential she just needs to stop following everything by the book and use common sense. He offers to train her in some combat and help her as much as he can. He escorts her home and helps her to her room, her injuries weakening her. He even gives her a small kiss on the forehead before he goes. (And the “Hmm” continues.)
Bray goes back to his shabby motel room to notice that the drapes are all pulled. He uses caution and isn’t surprised when Gabi is there. She tells him that this is far from over but she’ll make him a deal. If he leaves now, she’ll kill the others quickly. But if he stays, she’ll make each of them regret being able to feel. He responds by drawing the blinds to let the dawn in. Doesn’t matter though. Gabi quickly pulls on a helmet and is completely covered from head to toe. She knows there’s nothing he can do without a Slayer and that the Slayer is dead. She laughs at him as she goes to leave and mocks: “You know, the baby probably would have looked like you.” As the door closes we’re left with Bray’s final words:
“You’re right. This is far from over.”
