Episode 1.1 – First Impressions
Introductions of Danielle Michaels, a Watcher from England who is now assigned to help monitor the Hellmouth (or is she?). She meets Giles who gives her a job at the Magic Box. Anya reminds her that she will only be making minimum wage. Bad for profits otherwise. Danielle is also introduced, be it briefly, to Xander and Willow. As she leaves, she casts a quick glance to Giles. Hmm.
On her way home, Danielle stops at a grocery store for some tea, etc. (Even if it is American, it’s something at least.) What she doesn’t notice are the two vampires following her home.
She’s nabbed by one at her doorstep and is more than a little surprised when a man decapitates the second one. Meet Bray, who is equally surprised when Danielle quickly turns and managed to stake the other one. Small introductions are given where Bray informs Danielle that he is a vampire hunter.
Their conversation is cut short when they hear a “Thud… Thud…” What they find is a ten foot tall, red, horned and hoofed demon approaching. Bray heads back to his car to observe passively while Danielle rushes into her apartment and calls Giles. He in turn sends Willow and Xander to aid. During this time, the demon turns over a dumpster and searches through it, looking for something but doesn’t seem to find it.
Willow freezes the demon with some magical dust but tells them she doesn’t know how long it will last. Xander and Danielle head to the Magic Box to try and find out what it is. Bray follows at a distance, watching from the window of the store while Danielle explains what she saw to Xander, Giles, and Anya.
Danielle’s initial reaction is to kill the demon immediately. Anya protests that until they find out what it is they shouldn’t just jump to conclusions that it’s dangerous. So far all it’s done is look for something. This sparks quite the debate about whether or not any demon can be good. Giles points out that before she died, Buffy had dated a vampire, and the in fact a vampire helped them occasionally.
As if on cue, Spike walks in from the back. He was on his way to check on Dawn and decided to pop in and see what’s what. At sight of the vampire, easily identified by the all black outfit, pale skin (and maybe the fact that when Giles brought up a vampire helping he said: “That would be me.”), Bray rushes into the Magic Box and points his sword at Spike, challenging him to step outside. Giles tries to explain to Bray that Spike is harmless (I believe the term used was “neutered”) but Bray isn’t convinced, even when shown an interesting demonstration.
More arguments ensue to which Giles finally puts his foot down. The red demon is their priority since Willow can’t hold it back forever. They hit the books. Danielle actually finds it. A Malark demon which feeds off of human fat cells. Turns out the direction its heading is a cosmetic/liposuction clinic. Killing the demon is determined as a must. Once it sifts through the discarded fat, it might try to take it straight from the humans. The Malark must be decapitated which is not an easy task because of its exceptionally thick skin and maybe the fact that its nails are filled with poison so if it scratches you, you’re pretty much toast. Spike and Bray head out separate ways to kill it.
When Bray arrives, he sees Willow with some ort of protective shield trying to keep herself from getting hit by the Malark who looks really pissed off. Spike jumps out with a sword he managed to somehow obtain and succeeds in cutting off the demon’s hand and pissing it off more. It hits Willow, flinging her to the ground unconscious and then proceeds to fling the vampire away as well.
Bray goes into action. His first attempt is to just blow the things head off with a shotgun which might have worked had it not moved at the last minute. By now our lovable creature of darkness is a little miffed. Bray jumps and tries to decapitate it but only managed to get his sword stuck in its skin. Mustering all his strength, he pulls the sword through the rest of the neck and the demon falls, dead.
Spike gives some sympathy applause (“I was actually looking forward to watching you die, but I can wait.”) and picks up his discarded sword. Bray picks up an unconscious Willow and takes her back to the Magic Box where she is successfully revived. Giles inquires if the demon’s body is disposed of.
Giles, Danielle and Bray head out with axes (from a collection Bray would love to get a better look at) to chop up the demon enough to hide it. (Ew.) Bray notes Giles keeping one of the horns and Giles states that it could be of some magical help. Bray tells him that magic isn’t real. They dump the parts and head back to the Magic box to put up the weapons.
Bray admits he’s going to have to adapt if he’s going to have to face more than vampires and Giles welcomes him to come and talk if he wants. Bray agrees and everyone heads out for the night to shower off demon gunk and rest.
